Series: The Nevernight Chronicle #2
Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church hierarchy think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending the men who destroyed her familia; in fact, she’s told directly that Consul Scaeva is off limits. But after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia suspicions about the Red Church’s true motives begin to grow.
When it’s announced that Scaeva will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end him. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls, and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between love and revenge, and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.
I was kindly sent a copy of this book for review from HarperCollins Australia in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
JAY KRISTOFF HOW F**KING DARE YOU END A BOOK LIKE THAT!
Eight months after the events at the end of Nevernight, Mia is a Blade of the Lady of Blessed Murder, tasked with killing a number of people in Liis and Itreya. But even with her death numbers rising, many in the Red Church don't think she is worthy of her place among them. When she begins to learn more about the secrets of the Red Church from an unlikely ally, she turns to a gladiatorial collegium in order to stand face to face with those who were responsible for the death of her parents and baby brother. Even with her training in the Red Church, winning her way to the grand games in Godsgrave isn't easy, with new rivals determined to bring her down. As Mia continues to learn about the secrets surrounding the Red Church, Consul Scaeva, her gladiatorial collegium, and more shockingly her own family, she is more determined than ever to seek her revenge. But there are many secrets that Mia is unaware of that will change her life forever.
I'd like to reiterate my first point - Jay Kristoff how dare you end a book like that!? How can I wait for the next book after all that? Not that the cliffhanger was the only twist - there's twists and turns throughout the entire book as the plot continues to thicken in Mia's story. They always say that the second book in a series can be a bit of a let-down, but this is definitely not one of them. This book is as good as, if not better, than the first.
Once again, the narrator of our tale (who I can't wait to find out their identity), is back with more sarcasm and dramatics. The footnotes are back, giving readers a deeper look into the world of this story, with intriguing anecdotes that are just as interesting and entertaining as the actual story. Our two favourite shadow daemons are still tagging along with Mia and their banter is hilarious, and I'd honestly love to read a story just about them and their adventures - where can I get my own Mister Kindly and Eclipse?
If you thought the first book was a blood bath, you aren't ready for what happens in this book - you'll be covered in blood within the first few chapters. And if you loved the smut in Nevernight, you'll be pleased to know it's back with a twist or two that I doubt you're prepared for. Once again, I listened to the Godsgrave audiobook, so it was certainly interesting listening to those scenes being narrated by Holter Graham (but I highly recommend the audiobook because it's fantastic).
While I'd love to go into more detail about what goes down in this book, that would be too spoilerific. Just know that you will not be prepared for the events that take place in this installment, and you'll be anxiously awaiting the next book from the moment you turn the final page. If you loved the first book, you'll no doubt love this one just as much. Jay Kristoff certainly has a way with words and building intriguing fantasy worlds, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from the very first word.
Godsgrave is everything I wanted in the sequel and so much more! Don't even bother to try and figure out what will happen in this book, because there's so many twists, turns and revelations that'll leave you saying "what the f***k is happening?!"
Now excuse me while I freak out about this book as I wait for the third and final installment!
