Series: The Selection #3
When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown - or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the end of the competition approaches, and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realises just how much she stands to lose - and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants.
This book gave me all the feels!
Taking place shortly after The Elite, America is determined at all costs to show Maxon how much she cares for him. She's determined not to be the first one to say 'I Love You', but the longer she waits, the dangers on the outside of the palace threaten to ruin everything she has grown to love. Having formed an alliance with the Northern Rebels, Maxon and America risk their lives when the venture outside the safety of the palace's walls. But it's what's happening inside the walls that could tear them apart. The King is still determined to bring America down, even going so far as to ask Maxon to call of the Selection completely and start it again in a few months with a different group of girls. Knowing that she wants to be with Maxon, and that he wants to be with her, she stands up for herself against the King. But, just when everything seems perfect, news from home brings her down, and upon her return to the palace, everything falls apart as Southerners infiltrate the palace and attack at full force. Will America and Maxon survive to get their happy ending?
This book was a crazy emotional ride. There were happy tears and sad tears, and then more happy tears followed by more sad. I just couldn't control myself! It's been obvious how the story would eventually end, but there were some crazy plot twists thrown in and I was actually questioning whether there would be a happy ending (well, sort of since we know what The Heir is about).
The end of the book was so intense and I was shocked at who wasn't left standing after the rebel attack. I was not expecting where the book went, but I'm glad it did end on such a high, even if some of my favourites didn't make it *sob*.
I had really high hopes going into this final book of the original trilogy, and I was not disappointed. Loose ends were tied up and all the questions answered. It's the perfect ending to America and Maxon's story, and I can't wait to see how the story continues in Princess Eadlyn's Selection in The Heir.
Again, a lot of people found American annoying in this book, but I honestly couldn't see it. I love America and Maxon, and this series is definitely up with my all-time favourites. Kiera has such a fun writing style, and I can't wait to finish this series and see what else she brings out in the future.
Overall, if you haven't read this series yet, go out and pick it up NOW. It's such a fabulous story that is more than just a Prince trying to find a wife. It's about friendship, family, fighting for what you believe in, standing up for yourself, and being passionate about trying to change to social injustices of the world. This original trilogy has been such an amazing ride, and I can't wait to see how the story continues.
