Here now the words of the witches...
A centuries old spell unlocked the power of the Charmed Ones, three sister witches born to protect the innocent. Through success and tragedy, love and loss, the descendants of Melinda Warren battled the forces of evil for eight years before winning their happily ever after. But that was only the start of their story...
It's been a year and a half since Piper, Phoebe and Paige were victorious in their ultimate battler against evil. They've put the past behind them and settled into their relatively quiet lives wither their families. But the death of the first innocent that the Charmed Ones ever saved has reawakened an ancient evil more powerful than the sisters have ever faced. Now with a brand new threat emerging, the Charmed Ones must prepare for the fight of their lives.
As a major Charmed fan, I was so excited when I found out that the series had continued on in comic book form. I've had the book sitting on my shelf for ages and finally got round to picking it up and marathoning it with the first three volumes of season nine. It's just been like switching on the TV and watching the episodes and characters I've always known and loved!
Picking up where the season 8 finale gave a glimpse at, this volume is a bind up of the first seven comics of season 9. It follows the sisters living a relatively normal life, raising their magical children. Phoebe is still writing for the Bay Mirror. Paige is spending her time on her charges, and teaching at Magic School. Piper is working her way towards owning her own restaurant. And Leo is teaching at Magic School. Everything is going swimmingly until they attend the funeral of Brittany, the innocent they saved from the demon Javna, and their innocent as the Charmed Ones. They soon realise that the Underworld is on the move and a new power is rising up, attempting to destroy the Charmed Ones once and for all - what's new? They protect all of their innocents and call on the powers of all White Magic in order to stop the new Source of all Evil.
As soon as I opened this book, I was instantly hooked. The characters felt familiar, exactly how I remember them from the show (which I haven't watched for a while) and the storylines flowed how they would have on the show. The writing and the art had me feeling as if I were actually watching a whole new season, and it was great to be back in the presence of these characters.
On several occasions I laughed out loud, because I could totally imagine the characters I'd grown up with on the show acting and saying everything that was happening. Paul has managed to capture the essence of the show, the characters and their world within these comics and continue their story on. I loved the continuity and that the stories made sure to include the history of the series, rather than just creating a new story.
Having already read this book a couple of years ago, the drama did fall a little flat this time around on me, but I still really enjoyed it and can see it setting up the rest of season nine.
I highly recommend this book for Charmed fans as it's a wonderful way to continue the series. You will instantly connect with the characters and feel like you'd never said goodbye.
