Who will light the way for the rebellion?
Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal.
Now a king, Maven continues weaving his web in an attempt to maintain control over his country - and his prisoner.
While Mare remains trapped in the palace, the remnants of the Red Rebellion continue organising and expanding. As they prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows, Cal - the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart - will stop at nothing to bring her back.
Gosh, where do I even begin with this book? Get thrown back into Norta and a world divided by Red and Sliver blood as the Scarlet Guard Rebellion continues to rise against the Silver monarchy.
Mare is now Maven's prisoner, forced to live under the weight of Silent Stone. Despite the court demanding Maven punish Mare accordingly, he refuses to hurt her, instead using Mare as his own puppet to show the Reds that the Scarlet Guard is the enemy, looking to kill all the Newbloods. As Mare watches the months go by, unable to escape the king's cage, the Scarlet Guard continues to work, their eyes turning towards the military city of Corvium. Knowing they are in no position to try and rescue Mare, they hope their attack on Corvium, as well as house division in Maven's court will be enough to weaken Maven to allow a rescue attempt. But there are now more forces in play in this war, as various royal Houses work against Maven. Just when Mare thinks she's got the plan all figured out, everything comes crashing down around her, taking her heart with it.
I've been anticipating this book from the moment I finished Glass Sword so it was great to finally be back in this world! Firstly, for those that don't know, this book has multiple perspectives! The majority of the book follows Mare at Whitefire Palace, while the rest is from the Scarlet Guard (you'll have to read to see who's perspective it's from!). PLUS, there is a bonus perspective in the later part of the book, which you'll really get a kick out of. I loved having these multiple perspectives, and hope that it continues in the final book.
Firstly, if you are a Mare/Maven shipper, you'll really love this book. Their scenes are full of so much emotion, both from Mare's own thoughts and feelings to how she reads Maven. You get to see both the monster and the boy he used to be, and his feelings for Mare. And if you are a Mare/Cal shipper, you'll also really love this book because they have so many cute moments in the second half of the book. Also, there is a lesbian relationship in this book, which I really enjoyed. It's between two characters we've previously met, and I honestly wasn't expecting it to be one of the characters, but it really helped show a different side of them.
So much happens in this book and so much is revealed about all characters involved. Now, instead of having Maven vs. the Scarlet Guard, there's three players in this rebellion game - Maven, the Scarlet Guard, and the rebelling royal houses. It's a real twist in the story that has ramifications for all involved - it's intriguing and heartbreaking. With everything that has happened in this book, the final book is going to be explosive.
At 500 pages, I was so surprised that I read this book in only three days - THREE DAYS! While the story seemed slow in places, it was so fast-paced and action-packed. With every page you were drawn further into the story. And once again, Victoria threw in more twists and turns, ending the book on a cliffhanger that will have you wanting more. It will be a huge struggle waiting for the fourth and final book, especially when there is so much more that needs to happen with this story.
Overall, I loved this installment in the series. It was definitely worth the year-long wait. If you've loved the first two books, you'll love King's Cage. If you've been on the fence about this series, I feel this book may just sway you. I am now anxiously awaiting the final book and the fate of all the characters.
RISE, RED AS THE DAWN!
